Wilben Short, Head of Transport, London 2012 Olympic Games. In his capacity as head of transport for the London Olympics in 2012, is to check out the 9,000 parking spaces earmarked for people using the station to take the Olympic Javelin shuttles direct to the Olympic Park in East London. Short is now responsible for ensuring that the transport policy of the London Olympic Games Organising Committee (Locog) doesn't run off the rails. Short's task, crucial to the entire success of the Games, is to design and implement the whole Olympic Transport Plan.
After a first degree in physics and electronic engineering from the University of Leeds, Short joined British American Tobacco in Sierra Leone, West Africa. He spent 15 years with the company, during which he rose through the ranks to become operations director at the relatively young age of 31. But working in one function, in one company, in one industry, meant that Short's business experience was comparatively limited. He then headed for Cranfield School of Management in the UK, where he started a full-time MBA in 1988. With the help of an MBA, Wilben Short switched career tracks from the tobacco to transport industry. He ran the Northern Line for six years, and played a key role in London’s successful Olympic Games bid.
